Connect your PayPal account to accept QR codes

Getting Started

You will need:

  • An active Retail POS Account
  • An active PayPal Business Account 
  • A 2D or 1D Barcode scanner
    • For PC/Mac Retail POS users any scanner configured for HID Keyboard emulation will work


Socket Mobile is the only integrated 1D and 2D barcode scanner for iPad. Some Bluetooth scanners work with Retail POS if configured for HID Keyboard emulation. It is  advised to you speak with Retail POS support before ordering a scanner other than Socket Mobile.


Setting up PayPal with Retail POS:

Before accepting QR codes with PayPal and Retail POS you must first setup PayPal within the Retail POS payment type admin menu. To do this, follow the steps below:


1. Create the PayPal and Venmo QR code Payment type in Retail POS

  • Select Setup on the left navigation bar in Retail POS for PC/Mac users and then select Payment Types.
  • Tap the menu icon in the top left to open the side menu bar and choose Dashboard for iPad users.



  • Next for iPad users, click Menu.

  • Head to Setup and choose Payment Types.


  • You should now be on the Payments page. From here, click Add Payment Type and choose PayPal & Venmo QR Codes and Begin Setup.


  • Now, name your payment button to be displayed or use the default. 
  • Next, select the Outlet/s you want your payment button to work with

NOTE: Your Outlets selected here should match your outlet selection later in the PayPal pairing setup.



2. Create or log-in to your PayPal Business account

  • In the payment type setup select Pair a Terminal
    • You will be asked to sign in to your Retail POS account to grant PayPal access

NOTE: A new window or tab will open. Make sure your browser is not blocking pop-ups. If it is blocked you will need to allow access and click the Pair a Terminal again. 

  • On the hosted PayPal page enter your email address associated with your PayPal Business account. If you do not have a PayPal account enter the email address you want to use for your business account. 


  • If you have an account skip to Step 3.  
  • Create a password if you do not have a PayPal account. If you have an account and are presented the screen below, PayPal did not recognize your email associated with your account. 


  • Complete the PayPal forms to register your business account.

NOTE: Your business details MUST match Retail POS's Outlet details. 


  • The information required on the next page will vary based on the business type you select. 



  • Complete the forms for the legal owner of the business


  • You have now completed your setup. Please confirm your email address with PayPal to complete the account activation. 
    • The image on the right should appear in your Retail POS account. The image on the left is the confirmation page in PayPal.


  • The image on the right is your confirmation email. The image on the right is the PayPal to activate your account. 


3. Pair your PayPal Account with Retail POS

  • If you already have a PayPal account and logged in complete the pairing steps below.
  • If you just created a PayPal account (Step 2), first close the pop-up window in Retail POS and select Pair a Terminal again.
    • Log-in to your PayPal account

NOTE: A new window or tab will open. Make sure your browser is not blocking pop-ups. If it is blocked you will need to allow access and click the Pair a Terminal again. 

  • Now you are ready to pair your PayPal locations with Retail POS. 
    • Check to make sure your Business Name and Country match your Retail POS account Business Name.


  • Select the Retail POS Outlets you would like to pair your PayPal Business account Locations with

NOTE: If you add PayPal locations in the future or a new Retail POS outlet you will need to complete Step 3 again to pair the new location/s and outlet/s.


  • Confirm the Retail POS Outlet address matches the address you have set in PayPal for your location. If it does not match you will need to update the Outlet address in Retail POS to match. 

NOTE: After you update your Outlet address in Retail POS you will need to start from the beginning of Step 3 and your address should now be reflected correctly. 


Your Retail POS account is not synced with PayPal and ready to accept QR Code payments with PayPal and Venmo.
