Gift Cards are technically a liability/loan on the store from the customer. No revenue or profit is recorded until a product or service are provided to the customer.
The sales reports include the sales where the gift card is redeemed as that is actually when the store makes revenue. If the sales where the gift card is sold and the gift card is redeemed are both included in the sales reports it will give inflated revenue numbers.
