Configure a Star TSP100 or TSP143 printer to open the cash drawer (Windows & Mac)

Latest update: - Team Vend

Star TSP100 or TSP143 series printers are reliable thermal printers and can be configured to 'open' the cash drawer on whenever a receipt (or indeed any document) is printed to them.

There are a couple of driver versions for the TSP100 series, depending on the model (FurturePRNT, ECO etc) and operating system. This article explains how to configure both models to fire the cash draw whenever a receipt is printed.

_ NB: these basic steps for configuring printer preferences may also work for other printer models, such as Epson & Bixolon, though the option names may vary slightly. _

Windows

The cash drawer connects to your receipt printer, and is triggered to open when you finish a cash or cheque sale and the receipt is printed by the printer.

Tip: If you are using the old sell screen you can manually open the cash drawer by clicking CTRL + E on your keyboard when in Vend.

To setup your Printer to open your Cash Drawer:

1. Plug the RJ12 connector cable (the one that looks similar to a phone line) from the cash drawer into the receipt printer.

2. Next, head to your 'devices and printers' window on your computer.

3. Right click on your receipt printer, select printer properties -> device settings.

4. Once in here change the Peripheral Unit Type to 'Cash Drawer'

And set the Unit 1 and 2 options to 'Document Bottom'

Tip: If you want your cash drawer to fire before the receipt prints you can set the Unit 1 and 2 options to 'Document Top'.

5. Save these settings and test it out by clicking CTRL + E on your keyboard when in Vend or perform a test sale.

Mac OSX

The cash drawer connects to your receipt printer, and is triggered to open when you finish a cash or cheque sale and the receipt is printed by the printer.

Tip: You can also manually open the cash drawer by clicking Command - E on your keyboard when in Vend.

To setup your Printer to open your Cash Drawer:

1. Plug the RJ12 connector cable (the one that looks similar to a phone line) from the cash drawer into the receipt printer.

2. Head to the following URL: http://localhost:631/printers/. This will take you to CUPS. CUPS is a network printing service used by Mac computers. It allows you to setup your printers on a network, and customise options such as cash drawer setup.

3. Once in CUPS, Select your printer model from the list below:

4. Select from the drop down menu 'Set Default Options'

5. From here, select 'Cash Drawer Control', choose 'Open Drawer 1 and 2' under 'Cash Drawer' and click the 'Set Default Options' button below.

Your cash drawer should now be all set to go! To test it out, navigate to Vend and click Command + E on your keyboard or perform a test sale.
